Recovery calendar 2027: season plans for runners, riders, footballers

Your recovery calendar for 2027 starts now, in autumn 2026. If you want to run a spring marathon or get through a full summer of riding, the groundwork happens over the next few months. Recovery isn't a break you take at the end, it's something you plan into every phase of the season.

Runners training on an athletics track

Here are the big 2027 dates confirmed by mid-October 2026, plus a plan for runners, cyclists and footballers showing which kind of recovery takes priority when. Where a date isn't confirmed yet, we say so.

This calendar adds the yearly view to our guide to muscle recovery after a workout. That guide covers what helps after a single session. This one is about spreading recovery across twelve months.

Which recovery fits which phase of the season?

Every season has three phases, whether you run, ride or play. Your recovery changes with them.

Phase Goal Recovery
Build-up increase volume and resilience fixed routine after the hardest sessions, protect your sleep
Race phase arrive fresh on the start line taper, short and gentle sessions, nothing new
Off-season let body and head recover active rest, easy movement, sort out niggles

Compression boots fit best into the build-up. A meta-analysis found that 20 to 30 minutes at about 80 mmHg mainly reduced perceived soreness (Maia et al. 2024). In race week, stick to short sessions at a low level you already know from training.

Runners: spring or autumn

Spring marathon (London, Paris and plenty of others in April): count back from race day. Most plans last 12 to 18 weeks, so for late April your specific build-up starts between late December and late January. Until then you lay the base through autumn and early winter. The longest runs fall in February and March, often in the cold. That's when heat for stiff calves before the run and a session in the boots that evening are most useful. London 2027 is unusual: it runs over two days, with women and men racing on different days, so check which day you're on before you plan your taper.

Autumn marathon (Berlin on 26 September): the build-up falls in summer. Heat takes extra energy, so plan more sleep and early sessions on hot days. Specific protocols for long runs and intervals are in compression boots for runners. If you fly across several time zones for a marathon, see jet lag, travel and heavy legs.

Cyclists: base in winter, blocks in summer

The 2027 Tour starts on 2 July in Edinburgh, with stages to Carlisle, Liverpool and Cardiff, and the Tour de France Femmes starts in Leeds on 30 July. For club riders that's motivation rather than a target, but the rhythm fits: base on the turbo or outdoors in winter, intensity from spring, long rides and sportives in summer. After rides of over three hours your legs are under the most strain, so that's when the evening session pays off. What helps after long rides is in cycling recovery for your legs.

Footballers: pre-season, busy weeks, summer break

Grassroots fixtures for 2027/28 aren't out yet, but the rhythm is familiar: summer break, pre-season in July, the long run of autumn and winter fixtures, then the spring run-in. You need the most recovery in pre-season with its heavy running load and in weeks with two matches. A plan for the 72 hours after a match is in football recovery after a match. Clubs that want to use compression boots across the squad will find setup and hygiene in compression boots for gyms and clinics.

From practice

“In autumn the first thing I put in the calendar is the target race, then the recovery weeks. Only then come the hard sessions. If you don't plan recovery, you get it eventually in the form of an injury.”

Daniel Volpe, coach

What to sort out before the season

  • put target race, start of build-up and recovery weeks in your calendar
  • set fixed recovery slots after your hardest sessions
  • replace running shoes and kit before the specific phase
  • if you use compression boots, check size and contraindications before the load goes up

If you're thinking of getting your own boots for the season, our 7 criteria to check before buying recovery boots will help. The Revive Active with 7 pressure levels and 5 modes covers every use described here.

Who this calendar is for

Anyone working towards a race or a season in 2027. If you train without a fixed goal, you don't need a yearly plan, but you'll benefit just as much from regular recovery routines. What such a routine can look like in the evening is set out in our evening recovery routine. No calendar helps with pain that lasts for weeks: get it checked by your GP or a physio.

Conclusion

The big 2027 dates are set: London in April, the Tour start in July, Berlin in September. If you're working towards one of them, plan recovery now as a fixed part of every phase, with routines in the build-up, short sessions before racing and a proper break afterwards. Recovery tools are one building block with small effects and don't replace a training plan or sleep.
